Zoology

Zoology Program

Our mission as Zoology Program is to train qualified biologists who are experts in their fields and capable of conducting researches on subjects such as health, environment and biodiversity, and also who are aware of their ethical responsibility to living things, and who have master's and doctorate degrees.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Vahap ELDEM

Vahap ELDEM is an assistant professor in Zoology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. He has obtained his PhD from the Istanbul University and worked as a visiting scientist in Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI), China. Our lab uses a combination of Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and Third-generation long-range sequencing approaches as well as state-of-art bioinformatics/statistics tools to study evolutionary processes at the sequence, genomic and transcriptomic levels. Examples of areas in focus for our research include comparative genomics approaches to study the speciation process, genetics of adaptation and patterns of genome evolution, primarily using fishes and insects. Besides, recently, one branch of our lab focuses on the computational analysis of human disease-associated genes, genome polymorphism and population genetics using whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing as well as other state-of-art experimental procedures.
