Molecular Biotechnology and Genetics Program
The roots of the Molecular Biology and Genetics, which was officially founded in 2003, date back to the 1930s. The origins of genetic studies in our country have been started by two great scientists from Germany, Ord. Prof. Dr. Alfred HEILBRONN and Ord. Prof. Dr. Curt COSSWIG who come to Istanbul University during the 1933 University reform, and their colleagues who worked in Pharmacobotanics and Genetics Department at that time. “PRINCIPIA GENETICA”, the book of HEILBRONN and KOSSWIG is the product of their 25 years of work, and is the first genetics book written in Turkey. Education program is arranged on the basis of practical studies to train molecular biologists and biotechnologist who will gain comprehensive knowledge, work in different branches of molecular biotechnology & genetics and specialize in various biotechnological sectors. Courses are designed so that they can be integrated into the curricula of both domestic and international equivalents. You will use laboratory and computer-based techniques to study and modify genes and proteins in Molecular Biotechnology and Genetics programme. The techniques you will learn can be applied within medicine and the agricultural and food industries, for example to identify diseases and to genetically modify plants, animals and cells. Within the programme, you will study the structure, function and regulation of genes and proteins. The programme includes advanced research-oriented studies within molecular biology, biotechnology and systems biology. Independent laboratory work and computer-based analysis of experimentalbiological data are important elements of the included studies. You should therefore enjoy working both in the lab and at a computer.
