Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Program
Microbiology, as a basic and applied biological science, is concerned with the clarification and solution of many important problems in the fields of industry, animal husbandry, agriculture and medicine.Diseases caused by microorganisms occurring in humans, animals, and plants cause great damage in many aspects, especially human health. On the other hand, microorganisms have a major role in soil yield and animal breeding.In recent years, microbiology science has been used in many large-scale industrial processes such as the production of vaccines, antibiotics, hormones, or human proteins.The Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Program focuses on training about solving problems encountered in the field of microbiology by using research methods, and the same time, using by written, oral and visual methods, transfer systematically of their knowledge about developments of microbiology and quantitative and qualitative experimental data to the indoor and outdoor groups.In the Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Program, theses and scientific studies are conducted on aeromicrobiology, antimicrobial agent and disinfectant efficacy tests, the discovery of new antimicrobial agents, bioremediation, food microbiology, cave microbiology, microbiological corrosion, water microbiology, virulence factors of pathogenic bacteria, isolation and identification of amoeba, fungus, and various bacterial groups living free from environmental samples by using cultural and molecular methods.In the Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Program, education of master's and doctorate with thesis are carried out.

Ayten Kimiran is working as a Full Professor in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. She obtained her BSc degree in Istanbul University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for her PhD.Her main research areas includewater microbiology, food microbiology, virulence factors of pathogen bacteria, antibiotic and heavy metal resistance, bacteria-bacteria interactions, evaluation of the effectiveness of antibacterial agents.
Irfan Turetgen is working as a Full Professor in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. He obtained his BSc degree in Istanbul University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for his PhD.His main research areas include heterotrophic biofilms and disinfection in man-made water systems, Legionella ecology and anti-biofilm coatings in cooling towers, modelline man-made water systems to mimic their function in laboratory scale and test the disinfectants under conditions as close as possible to real life.
Prof. Dr. Esra Sungur
Esra Sungur is working as a Full Professor in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. She obtained her BSc degree in Istanbul University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for her PhD.Her main research areas include microbiologically Induced Corrosion as well as its prevention, anaerobic bacteria (especially sulfate reducing bacteria), biofilm, petroleum microbiology, microbial diversity and ecology, microbial genetics.
Zuhal Zeybek is working as a Assoc. Prof. Dr.in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. She obtained her BSc degree in Istanbul University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for her PhD.Her main research areas include water microbiology, investigation of Legionella bacteria and free-living amoebae in environmental samples, amoeba-bacterial interactions, antibacterial and antiamoebal effects.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nihal DOĞRUÖZ GÜNGÖR
Nihal Doğruöz Güngör is working as a Assoc. Prof. Dr.in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. She obtained her BSc degree in Istanbul University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for her PhD.Her main research areas include biofilm, microbial corrosion, cave microbiology, microbial biodegradation, antimicrobial substances produced by microorganisms

Duygu Kadaifçiler is working as a Assoc. Prof. Dr.in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. She obtained her BSc degree in Trakya University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for her PhD.Her main research areas include aeromicrobiology, water microbiology, mycology (allergenic and mycotoxigenic fungi), and fungal biyodiversity in agricultural soils.

Elif Özlem Arslan Aydoğdu is working as a Asst. Prof. Dr. in Fundamental and Industrial Microbiology Division of Biology Department at Istanbul University. She obtained her BSc degree in Istanbul University and attended to Istanbul University, Institute of Sciences for her PhD.Her main research areas include bioremediation, immunology, food microbiology, soil and water microbiology and investigation of new antimicrobial agents.
