Freshwater Resource and Management Programme
Researchareas of theFreshwater Resources and Management Programme focus a very wide range of areas starting from the measurement of micropollutants to evaluating biological quality elements in aquatic ecosystems. The impact of domestic, industrial and agricultural pollutants on water resources are determined through integrated basin management. Research area of the programme is summarized below;
•    Determination of thebiotoxins (mainlycyanotoxin, PSP, DSP) usinganalyticalandgenetictoolsandtoinvestigatetheirtoxinproductionmechanism in a naturalandcontrolledenvironment.
•    Analysis of agricultural pollutants, mainly pesticides and heavymetals, and the investigation of their effects on the food chain in aquatic environments
•    Investigation and management of cyanotoxin, odorandtaste (Geosminand MIB) problems in drinking water resources
•    To monitor microbial community dynamics by next-generation molecular tools and determine the effects of environmental factors on microbial community structures
•    Determination the composition of algae, zooplankton, zoobenthos, macrophytes and fish species, their distribution areas and relationships with environmental factors
•    To conduct studies on the spreading areasand habitat selection of invasive species,
•    To conduct research on Algal Biotechnology,
•    Valorization of aquatic biomass by biotechnological processes
•    To investigate the impact of climate change on inland waters and to create simulations for water resources.
•    To conduct research on water quality and habitat losses occurring in water resources, to carry out restoration studies specific to the area,
•    To create models related to lakes, streams and drinking water reservoirs, taking into account the existing pressures on water resources,
•    To develop “Ecosystem-basedmanagement” models on water resources

-Meriç Albay is a Professor in Freshwater Resource and Management Division of AquaticSciencesDepartment at IstanbulUniversity. He obtained his firstdegree, BSc, in IstanbulUniversity. He attendedtoInstitute of Sciences, Department of FreshwaterSciences, IstanbulUniversity, for his PhDstudies.He has highlevelskills in thearea of limnology,aquaticecology, aquaticecotoxicology, algalbiotechnology. Dr. Albay’sinternationalrecognition is highlightedbyinternationalarticles, morethan 15 invitedseminars, andvisitinginternationaluniversitiesandinstitutes. He has beenalso on theorganisingcommitteeforinternationalconferences.

Prof.Dr. YELDA AKTAN TURAN




-Yelda AKTAN TURAN is a Professor in Marine and Freshwater Resources Management Department at the Faculty of Aquatic Sciences, Istanbul University. She obtained her first degree, BSc, at the Faculty of Aquatic Sciences, İstanbul University. She attended to Institute of Sciences, Istanbul University, for her PhD. She did post-doctoral studies at Sassari University, Italy. Her main research areas include the phytoplankton, benthic algal communities and macrophytes in freshwater and coastal marine areas, their interactions with environmental parameters, particularly harmful algal blooms, mucilage and eutrophication events. In addition to algal ecology, her recent scientific researches are focused on the sensitive habitats. She has developed partnerships with many national and international groups involved in estimating of health status of Posidonia oceanica meadows in marine coastal areas.

-Reyhan Akçaalan Albay is a Professor in Freshwater Resource and Management Division of AquaticSciencesDepartment at IstanbulUniversity. Sheobtained her firstdegree, BSc, in Ege University, IzmirandattendedtoIstanbulUniversity, Department of FreshwaterSciencesfor her PhDstudies.Shespentoneyear in Prof. Codd’slab in DundeeUniversityworking on cyanotoxinsduring her PhDperiod. Her main researchareasincludealgalecology, eutrophicationwith a specialemphasis on thealgaltoxins, especiallycyanotoxinmeasurementanddynamics, tasteandodourproblemsandtheirmanagement in aquaticecosystems.

- Özcan Gaygusuz is an AssociateProfessor in Faculty of AquaticSciences at İstanbul University. He received his undergraduateeducationfromtheFisheriesFaculty in 2001.
