Astronomy and Astrophysics

Astronomy and Astrophysics Program

Astronomy and astrophysics master program, with its seven faculty members, provides opportunity to take education on particular topics such as stellar astrophysics, high energy astrophysics, galactic astrophysics, extragalactic astrophysics to the students who have undergraduate degree on astronomy and space sciences, physics etc. and have motivation to specialize in the topics they would like to focus in details. The program which will be carried out entirely in English, provides students opportunity to do international researches as well as to develop international collaborations during their master studies.

Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Kai Oliver SCHWENZER

Kai Oliver Schwenzer is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at Istanbul University. He obtained his undergraduate degree, Master and PhD from the Institute of Theoretical Physics at the University of Heidelberg, where he worked in the field of Theoretical Nuclear and Particle Physics. After Postdoc and Faculty appointments at North Carolina State University, the University of Graz, Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Tübingen, he is now working at Istanbul University in the broad area of Theoretical Subatomic Physics, Astrophysics and Gravity to understand the structure of matter and the behavior in extreme environments. His main current interest is to connect multi-messenger signals, involving radio-, X-rays and gravitational waves to the matter in the interior of compact sources.

Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Massimilano De PASQUALE

Massimiliano De Pasquale is an Assistant Professor in Department of Astronomy and Space Sciences at Istanbul University. He obtained his Master degree at University of Messina, Italy, and his PhD from University “La Sapienza” and the Institute of Space Astrophysics of Rome, where he worked in the field of observational high energy Astrophysics. After Post Doctoral and Faculty appointments at the Institutes of Space Astrophysics of Rome and Palermo, at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory - University College London, at University of Nevada Las Vegas, he is now working at Istanbul University in the area of multi-wavelength observations of Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) and other relativistic explosions, in order to explore the physics of extreme environments. His main current interest is multi-wavelength Astronomy: the connection between radio, optical, X-rays and gamma-ray observations and gravitational wave observations of sources such as short GRBs and mergers of binaries composed of compact objects.
